Grow Your Blog!!!

Hello fellow bloggers,

I’m excited to participate in this Grow Your Blog Event. I began blogging just a few short months ago. My daughter encouraged me to do so.

Her blog is: mycalmdelight.blogspot.com

Anyway at first I thought, who has time to sit around all day and read blogs, but with a little encouragement I went ahead and took the plunge. Now I get it and yes I do spend a fair amount of time ‘sitting around reading blogs’. Already it’s been a fun journey. First off I am struck by the awesome talents of so many. The photography is awe-inspiring, the crafts are impressive, and the fashion ideas are helpful. I love the retro themes, the apron themes, the antique themes. And of course I love the personal insights into your lives. I love hearing about the grand kids and the fun you have with them and I love anytime I get to take a walk down memory lane. So thank you everyone for sharing your lives and your talents.

My blog isn’t quite like any of yours, I don’t showcase a particular talent or skill and I’m not spending too much time on my day to day activities. I do however feel like I have a voice and something to say that hopefully you will enjoy and just maybe be inspired by.

My blog, fit and healthy baby boomers, is not about what size we wear or even what age we are, but rather how the foods that we choose to eat effect our bodies and our overall health. My eyes were first opened to the concept thatthe foods we eat (and the quantity in which we eat them) are killing us, when 25 years ago my Mom died from heart disease. There were no obvious signs, and she had just gotten a clean bill of health from her GP. She phoned one day to say that she had called 911 and she was in the emergency room. Well she never left the hospital and 6 weeks later after being diagnosed with heart disease, high blood pressure and undergoing bypass surgery, she passed away. I still miss her.

Soon after, I started hearing about research being done by renowned physicians. Their studies were revealing that the foods we eat are causing havoc in our bodies and by making better food choices we could prevent or reverse many diseases, including heart disease. So began my interest in the food and the amount that I put in my mouth and provide for my family. That's when I started reading labels and ingredient lists. Oh wow, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, maltodextrin, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, sodium content plus fertilizers and pesticides sprayed on our crops, oh my no wonder we’re chuck full of diseases. And then there’s the pharmaceuticals. . .

I'm passionate about this topic and hope that you will join me as we research and discuss baby steps to improve our health. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to enjoying my grand kids in good health and for as long as the good Lord allows me to remain on this earth.

I’m happy to offer a giveaway. All you have to do to enter is simple leave a comment. In keeping with the health and fitness theme, here is the giveaway.

The winner will be announced February 8th.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you’ll decide to follow along and see where this may take us.

To your health,

Me and my honey (Ken) soon to celebrate our 40th anniversary!

  3. Goodness me! I think your blog is probably what I need to remind me to keep taking care of myself!! I'm a 1959 vintage, and need to take a bit more care - though I am losing weight. Your reminder about portion size is a very good one...I will keep it in mind when I serve dinner on our big dinner plates!!

  10. Well maybe this may be the place that will spur me on to do what I know is right - what I know makes me feel better - but what seems to hard to do - eat correctly. I feel fortunate to have found your blog through the party. Back later to read some more.

  11. You've adopted a great mission! Your message is so timely because life expectancies are becoming longer, making it more important to have those extra years be healthy ones. It's really convenient to come here for tips and updates; who has time to find and read books on the topic? I don't!
Thanks for the nice give away too! I'd love to win!

  13. Sharon, So happy to meet you. I'm also going through the get healthy stage of life. I became a vegetarian a year ago and started running in June 2012. The weight is slowly coming off and I am fitter than I have been in years because of the running. I'm joining your blog. Can't wait to read more. Hope you pop over to my site and take a look. I'm not the normal crafter that most are here at the blog party. My blog is mostly about everyday life. Have a great evening.

  18. Hi, Sharon. I'm visiting from Grow Your Blog. I'm your newest follower. I hope you will visit my blog, Everyday Ruralty (www.everydayruralty.com). I am an avid label reader and food grower/cook/nutrition investigator. I have four family members, out of six, all with different food allergies, so labels are BIG for me.

As a newer blogger, you might enjoy meeting the group that gets together on my virtual "porch" every Tuesday. It's called Chats on the Farmhouse Porch and we have been meeting for 76 weeks. I have a lovely group of women who meet each week. Sometimes new folks come, go, or stay and the group gets bigger. Each week I post 5 questions just to get conversations started. Everyone blogs about their answers and we visit each other form a link on my blog. It has made a real sense of community for us. I hope you'll stop by. Have a great week! Patrice

  29. I just popped over for a visit from the blog party (Whew!...that's a long list of blogs!) and I knew right away, from the moment I saw your top banner that I would love it and become a follower. We have been making huge changes to our diet as well. In fact, I have a recent post about some of what's currently going on...an elimination diet..which is making even bigger changes. We had already been making changes years ago but saw two films, "Food Inc." and "Forks Over Knives" and we got even more serious about it. There's no going back now. We've always been very active and want to stay "young" as long as possible. I've always admired the "older" ladies on the ski slopes and said I wanted to be skiing at those ages and beyond. Well, I've reached that point where I'm one of the few in my age group on the slopes. It feels sooo good! Anyway...I hope you'll get a chance to stop by for a visit on my blog. I'll definitely be following yours. So happy to have found another healthy, inspiring blog. :-)

  30. Hi Sharon, what a fabulous concept for your blog. I for one really need this help. All of a sudden my life has fallen apart with the diagnosis of severe fibromyalgia, high blood pressure (which is currently under control with meds) but the eating thing is a really big issue that I must work on so I am your newest follower/friend. I look forward to getting to know one another better and successfully even albeit through baby steps getting healthy and as you said, "being on the planet as long as the good Lord will let me"
    Hugs,
    Beth P
